MAKING DISCIPLES OF CHRIST

March 15, 2019

Dear St. James Faithful,

During our annual parish assembly in February, the theme for this year’s stewardship campaign was unveiled–Making Disciples of Christ. Making disciples is the core mission of the Church. It means sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ as revealed in the Gospels in every life situation. The fruit of laboring to make disciples is seeing the positive changes that come into people’s lives. We see how empowering both individuals and society as a whole to follow His Divine Message leads to a changed world where holiness and justice, spirituality and peace prevail.

Many of us give to various other charitable organizations that do a wonderful job feeding the hungry, helping the poor and serving the underprivileged. However, St. James’ mission goes further: It brings us into a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ. With your generous support of our stewardship program over the years, our parish has already been able to accomplish many goals. How many young parishioners have grown closer to God after attending a Diocesan summer program at Hye Camp, St. Nersess or the Holy Land made financially possible by stewardship funds? How many of us have felt the love Christ preaches when we see our stewardship program allowing us to expand our involvement in outreach initiatives so that we may share God’s bounty more generously with those less fortunate than ourselves?

Other examples of St. James Making Disciples of Christ abound:

  • Increasing our annual budget to be able to do more for the community.
  • Renovating several key areas of our church building.
  • Donating 10% of our stewardship funds to FAR and other youth-related projects.
  • Initiating environmental initiatives such as making our building more energy-efficient by replacing windows and doors and installing new thermostats and LED lighting.
  • Improving accessibility: In addition to our lift chair and handicapped parking, we have created wheelchair space in the sanctuary and are making sacramental visits to homebound parishioners. We are even printing large-font worship materials for those who need them.
  • Creating the DESILK mobile app (available in both the Apple store and the Google Play store).

On Sundays during Great Lent, we will be exploring this year’s stewardship theme by studying the Epistle of James. Each week we will connect the Lenten Sunday sermon to a reading from James. We ask that you make every effort to be present for these sermons so that you may better appreciate the theological foundations of Making Disciples of Christ.

We also ask that you reaffirm your commitment to this most solemn cause through a generous donation of your treasure in 2019. If you have already pledged this year, we thank you again and kindly ask that you remember to honor your pledge before the end of the year if you have not already done so. Please use the enclosed form to make your stewardship donations.

Should you have any questions regarding St. James’ stewardship program, please contact me or any Parish Council member.

In Christ,

Fr. Hovhan Khoja-Eynatyan`
